Now my answer: mirroring! The need for mirroring is the #1 reason people sexually offend, regardless of the sexual offense. Sex offenders, like the vampyre, have a mirroring deficit. It doesn’t have to be what a normal person would consider positive mirroring. If a person looks terrified, horrified, shocked can be great mirroring for a sex offender. The smiles and delight of a teen-aged daughter can be great mirroring for a man whose marriage and sex life has gone sour. Unfortunately, these little dates with the daughter can start to inch into marital territory rather than just serve as a validity boost.
So here’s my great insight: why doesn’t a vampyre appear in a mirror? Because there is no mirroring. When there is no mirroring - no validation coming from life itself or our relationships or our work, an intense and unrelenting hunger for mirroring will appear and drive us towards any behavior that will as quickly as possible bring us a solid dose of that very mirroring we are suffering from a deficit of.
