THE 8 PATHWAYS: PATHWAY 1

Family Values

Values are elusive treasures, antiquated even, as our current language does not suit them well.  Yet, the lack of them in the heart of families undermines civilization and weakens its structure, its exoskeletons.  Hermes’ Web and its toys provide tools for engendering and articulating family values in a way that bridges the differences of generations and deepens the roots of those values.

A client's relationship with their father, present, absent, harmful, or idealized, often sits underneath presenting issues that look unrelated on the surface. This collection gives therapists a set of figures built specifically around father-child dynamics: absence and abandonment, harsh or critical parenting, the legacy a father leaves behind, and the complicated grief of losing or never having had the relationship a client needed.

Rather than asking a client to summarize a lifetime of complicated feeling in words, a clinician can hand them a figure and ask what it would say, or where it belongs in relation to the rest of the family. These tools are especially useful early in treatment, when a client may not yet have language for what they carry.

Lost Fathers: Locke: All For A Kidney!
$55.00

Quick Overview: Also drawn from Lost, this figure centers on Locke's story — reconciling with an absent father only to be manipulated and exploited by him. A concrete way to discuss conditional love, exploitation, and the pain of a parent who returns only to take.

A plane crashes on a remote, unknown island. The survivors must make do in this new world. Most of the characters have major father issues. There is a Hatch/hidden world that they have to uncover, open up, and dare to explore: what we call the "hard core" in hard-core people - the center of The Hoberman Sphere when it is closed tight! The island is like a prison: there is no obvious way out, no reprieve, no rescue. You are forced to deal with yourself and your connections to others. All that you have hidden away comes out into the open at some point - there is no escape from yourself! Obviously, there is a plethora of things to explore in this small group of characters:

Locke: Locke was in a wheelchair, but after the crash he is able to walk again! He was estranged from his father for years when the father suddenly showed up, generous and loving as hell, and reluctantly revealed at some point that he needed a kidney. Locke was like: "Of course - why would I not!!" However, the second the kidney was donated, the father was gone before Locke could even shake off the anesthesia. Talk about rubbing salt in the wounds. It was a non-loving, take-advantage-of set-up!

Fathers can be cruel! I think of some of the dialogue in SHOOTING STARS, the biographic movie about Labron James. One of the Fab Four’s fathers explains to the boys’ coach and others how the boys are used to disappointment: no one to depend on, and now their new coach is already leaving them. The boys are used to disappearing fathers and father figures and it hits them hard because every time they trust or depend on someone, they disappear. It’s clearly a hard cycle to break. And of course, in this anti-DEI era, we’re not supposed to talk about how the treatment of African-Americans and Native Americans impacted their capacity to father or keep families together, but that prohibition doesn’t do away with the questions or the need for discussion and understanding.

These LOST character toys all have major father issues which they've locked away, leaving the dilemma of how to open the hatch and deal with what is inside of it: both the literal hatch in the show and the metaphorical locked hatch that hides the emotional and psychological wounds in one’s core. These toys are transitional objects that provide major fodder for therapists trying to moderate father issues clinically. The toys can get people talking, imagining, telling their stories and their heartbreaks rather than keeping it all locked up inside with shame, anger, rage, abandonment and disappointment galore. We don’t need more GFUs - we need people with connections to their core and spiritual center and the capacity to navigate and manage the wounds and damage that has been done to them - personally and generationally.

LOST is currently on NETFLIX. Track down and watch the Locke episodes and see how happy he is when his father shows up and appears to care about him. Locke is so touched and moved he would literally do anything for his new-found father. And you can also watch Locke as he is befuddled when he can’t get in touch with his father, when he won’t be let into his Father’s compound, and when he begins to realize what has actually happened, and that he is back on his own again! Crest-fallen, betrayed, left out in the cold - persona non grata!

Simpson's Nuclear Reactor: Rules of Alchemy Simpson's Nuclear Reactor: Rules of Alchemy
Quick View
Simpson's Nuclear Reactor: Rules of Alchemy
$100.00

Quick Overview: Using the nuclear reactor as a metaphor, this piece explores how repressed, unprocessed material — like nuclear waste — doesn't disappear, it just keeps contaminating from below the surface. A rich discussion starter on repression and the long-term cost of avoidance, drawing on Jungian ideas about transformation.

I have a good friend in The Netherlands, Rob, who informed me that Europeans hate Nuclear Reactors, himself included. I was surprised at the vehemence of his reaction, but on reflection, I realize how much about this subject we consistently and habitually repress and don’t think about, much less do anything about it!! For instance, every so often, we are reminded that nuclear reactors in the Ukraine are in danger of imploding due to Russians holding the operators hostage by gunpoint. In addition to the sheer issue of nuclear pollution and the fact that plutonium takes over 250,000 years to decay to safe levels of radioactivity, there are the principles of Alchemy, articulated well by Carl Jung in his Collected Works, that also bring to light a gigantic flaw not only in reactors, but in many of the products we are sold these days and which are increasingly polluting our air, water, earth, and bodies - some for many generations to come.

Violating these alchemical/spiritual principles has become common day occurrences with little or no discussion. Lobbyists work hard to keep these facts from the citizens of nations that believe in informed choices and freedom of information. The United States had to pass a law called THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT because it is obviously not a principle readily in play in contemporary cultures. Even now battles are going on regarding products known as PFAs, among other names, and which have destroyed, and continue to destroy, people’s lives, land, animals and well-being.

In the 1980's, I presented at a conference on Nuclear Power in Albuquerque, New Mexico. My presentation was heavily reliant on Carl Jung's writings on alchemy and the principles therein. One of those is the Vas Hermeticus, the sacred vessel in which the chemical operations take place that produce Gold in the long run - more metaphysical gold, such as the soul, rather than wealth for those who can afford to build factories. In alchemy, if there is waste, if things spill and contaminate, the work is ruined - it comes to a halt and one must start over. One can not just conveniently shed any part of the process one doesn't care for, or smells bad, or is dangerously contaminating. Nuclear Power has this inherent problem: it produces plutonium waste that is dangerous for up to 250,000 years. Government facilities in the US (Hanford, Washington has 56 million gallons) and Russia have attempted to store liquid nuclear waste and tanks have failed or rusted and vast regions of land, especially in the Ural mountains in Russia, are contaminated, not to mention Chernobyl, or Ukranian nuclear plants currently threatened in the war zone!

American manufacturing largely ignores the principles of alchemy. The race to produce chemicals that make life easier (teflon, furniture stain protectors, fire suppressants) often overlook the sludge that is produced in the process. The Love Canal is an example. Even worse, recent revelations that waste sludge sold to farmers for spreading over and fertilizing their fields has resulted in poisoned land and crops unfit for consumption. The company who made many millions selling this product is currently working hard to shed any responsibility for the harm resulting from their agri-business - they want to put responsibility back on the producers of the PFAs. That is a nice idea, but not realistic, and more like passing the buck. I’d say they’re all responsible and they all profited from the transfer of these dangerous chemicals into our food chain and our bodies.

Alchemical principles are also spiritual principles. If the core is contaminated, the soul can be damaged and become dangerous. We are seldom taught these principles, or, if we are, are not taught how they apply to all aspects of life. Just as a human is responsible for their unconscious, we as a human community are responsible for our waste, our dross, the messes we leave behind. The US has hundreds of thousands of abandoned oil wells that are not properly sealed or cleaned up because the owners didn't want the expense of doing so. They took the cash and ran. Farm chemicals contain lethal side effects for animals and insects - our bee and butterfly populations have been endangered. Anyone who spends time in the countryside finds it rare to see a butterfly these days. Honey producers fear for the future of their profession and their bees.

The Simpson's reactor brings all this to mind: the waste products of actual reactors and the waste engendered in any factory process, and the parallel degree to which we lack proper procedures for creating sustainable spirituality in our youth. This was once done by initiation rites. Later we utilized catechisms, not always taken very seriously in my own youthful experience. And who , if anyone, taught us how to manage our core, showed us the control panel visible in the toy, made sure we became proficient. What happens when we have to wear a protective suit or condom in our own psychological/spiritual core because it is so contaminated that it/we are unsafe? What of us who are faithful to a religion on one level and yet pump all manner of errant emotions and needs into our core to bury it, get rid of it, thinking "out of sight, out of mind."

Back again in the 80’s or so, I debated NSP (Northern States Power) in a stage at a local college - me against their experts/mouthpieces. I had also written a paper about nuclear power and the names of nuclear substances and the implications that created. (Americium - the nuclear substance that used to be in the majority of home smoke detectors is the most dangerous of all nuclear substances. And on the back of the detector it simply directed the user to “dispose of it safely!”) They didn’t take my concerns about waste seriously, I remember that clearly. Their focus was on providing energy, not worrying about the long-term effects or consequences. In their eyes I was a young fool inadequately informed - a nuisance!

Carl Jung basically taught that what we expel, bury, suppress, will eventually come back to life and have a volition of its own, and likely a value system contrary to our own. The same is true of chemical waste that gets into our drinking water and the food chain. Or the tiny plastic pellets that are reported to be everywhere on earth now, including inside our bodies and even inside the bodies of newborns.

Ignorance is an interesting word: it comes from the root word "ignore." What we ignore creates our ignorance. Our ignorance can be our undoing. We do not hear; we do not speak; we do not see..

We need to learn to manage our cores lest they explode, melt down, become a China Syndrome. Real people in the real world such as corporate leaders and such, need to admit their responsibilities in polluting our biospheres. I have included a link to a 8/31/24 New York Times article on PFAs in city waste sludge that has been sold to farms as fertilizer and is being discovered to be dangerously polluting, maiming and killing farm livestock and again entering our food chain. Many groups involved in the process of creating and distributing this sludge deny any malfeasance or responsibility for the final outcomes. The "not sees."

This toy represents spiritual principles and what happens when they are ignored, when those principles are violated, and the enormous consequences that can result. You can see the chaos in the window on the toy that shows what's happening inside the reactor gone wild! That's why the Simpsons TV show is so wonderful - the Simpsons and their friends flounder into all kinds of important things with humor and distractions, leaving behind a clear residue of meaning!!

Check out the link below from the NYTimes. Also, watch the movie DARK WATERS for a clear exposition on earlier discoveries about PFAs where there was accountability established after great effort, but no true follow-through on the problem, allowing it to fester and expand for many more years, culminating now in the NYTimes article - re-emerging into our cultural consciousness.

Spirituality is a painful process as we come to terns with our unintended consequences, and our intended actions that created unintended consequences that we often refused to see, hear or speak about, like the 3 monkeys!! We have that toy available as well!

This toy also comes with a tray of donuts: what better way to soothe one's anxieties and fears in the midst of chaos!!

For therapists, knowing the control board, how to manage the core, how to maintain containment until the process is complete, are all crucial. Too often therapy does not involve core-level change and insurance companies aren't interested in paying for it either. Flip that house - dress it up - make it look new again! Personally, when violence has been involved, I want to see core-level change, and for that, responsivity is a necessity, unless you're satisfied with a trained seal!!

By the way, I just took down an old smoke alarm a couple months ago and noticed it was one of those with Americium in it - a radioactive substance more dangerous and powerful than Plotumium in my understanding. On the back it says to dispose of properly! How does one do that? How does one feel about having this in one’s house. It reminds me of the nuclear executive who, to prove Plutohium was harmless back in the day, took some home and sprinkled it on his children’s breakfast cereal. And I’m sure no harm was seen as typically that stuff, in small quantities, is not an instant disaster. That’s why they wear badges that record your exposure when you work in a nuclear facility. Once you reach the maximum level for a year, you have to go home and can’t work again until the next year cycle begins. Little notes about nuclear substances in our lives and the absurdity of it at times!!

**Notes to work on: Aboriginals and the black rocks - they knew the danger! Also, transference and counter-transference - becoming safe for others and not harboring death wishes in your core.

Dr. Caligari: Demon Dad!
$60.00

Quick Overview: Part of a four-piece set built on classic 1920s German horror films, this figure explores controlling behavior that masks unaddressed inner turmoil. It's suited to discussions of family control dynamics, denial, and how untreated pain gets displaced onto others.

work in the Mendendez family members-recdent TV shows

This collection of four exquisitely crafted toys, based on two German films from 1920, capture the basic dynamics that lead to violence and addiction: the servant mentality, passive-aggressive patterns, trauma bonds, perpetration, ego-level ignorance of core-level pathology, and others!!

Dr. Caligari is the controlling Burgermeister who is writhing with demons beneath his splendid cape. His refusal to address his own issues guarantees evil.- displaced as it may be by coming out through Cesare. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is more than a horror masterpiece – it has been hailed as one of the most important films ever. If nothing else, it certainly defined the gothic look for the better part of a century. Caligari, a mysterious carnival hypnotist whose very presence heralds doom, is sculpted in authentic detail. Open Caligari’s body to find a strait jacket composed of writhing demons. The set features a detailed carnival base that replicates the feel of the film. Dr. Caligari’s demons guarantee Cesare’s trauma bond.

Cesare looks great – he’s talented and handsome, with a taste of Michael Jackson about him, but his soul is controlled by Dr. Caligari. A trauma bond is his ugly fate. Cesare is a strange sleepwalker able to see into the future, but his travels with Caligari’s carnival also spell death and horror for those whose path they cross. This Cesare figure is articulated and includes a weapon. The diorama base features a twisted, impressionistic streetlamp, an eerie country bridge, and an unconscious damsel in imminent distress, or perhaps already dispatched, emblematic of the bloody trail Cesare always leaves behind him, in spite of his efforts and hopes to the contrary.

Abusive parents can imbue their children with trauma bonds – a destructiveness of self and/or others that horrifies the very person carrying out the destruction - “What got into me? Where did this come from?” Violence gets wired into one’s DNA and you live out the unresolved horrors and misdeeds of your forbearers. Sometimes we have to look elsewhere for the root causes violence as it can roll down through the generations and ruin the hopes of the young. Systematic abuse is often the culprit! Dr. Caligari has Cesare under his spell, murdering Caligari’s enemies and even Cesare’s own beloved. Those with trauma bonds typically leave a bloody and tragic trail behind them as they course through life.

DR. CALIGARI ALONE
This toy by itself offers many possibilities in terms of ego-dystonic behaviors, hidden worlds, the contaminated core, abusive parenting and others. It’s all explained in the back-up/training materials. In fact, if we had special psychological x-ray glasses, this is how some fathers would look. Under their cloak of respectibility is something demonic that poisons their children. Where does it stop? Which generation? This toy - Dr. Caligari - is great for having that conversation!

It’s hard not to think of the father of the Menendez boys in this context. What helped those boys become who they were? The father who got angry not because his sons did something illegal, but because they got caught! Getting caught impacted his reputation in the community, made the father feel shame and want to move away until the crimes had faded in people’s memories. The father figures in one’s life, if there are any, can do great damage or great good! Young people need validation, positive mirroring: they need to be seen. One things of Avatar where a compliment is to say: I see you! Feeling invisible does damage and it is the job of parents to validate their children, to see them, to protect them, to recognize and encourage their talents and strengths. A tall order for some parents unfortunately!

Lost Fathers: Kate-Left Her Dad In Pieces

Quick Overview: Drawing on the TV series Lost, this figure explores unresolved father issues and the buried material that surfaces when there's no escaping oneself. Useful for discussing family-of-origin wounds with clients who relate to the show or its themes of forced self-confrontation.

LOST: A plane crashes on a remote, unknown island. And there are strange and dangerous surprises - like a Polar Bear! Obviously, there is a plethora of things to explore in this small group of characters: ( This is reminiscent of Stanislav Lem’s SOLARIS, featuring a planet where all you have ignored in your life comes to life and demands attention and resolution. SOLARIS is a great book and a powerful film!)

KATE: Kate's father sexually abused her and presented to her and the world that if any problems existed, it was not him, but Kate who had the problems—all too typical of sexually abusive fathers. The father drives the daughter crazy by abusing her and subsequently denying it, and then presents those “crazy” reactions as proof that the daughter is making it all up. This can truly drive the daughter crazy, turn her own family against her, or she may choose to go her own way, or, she may also act out in all kinds of ways, either giving up on reality or just trying anything to blot out the pain and reality she has to continue to live with, sit with at the dinner table, worry that he’ll slip into her room again.

At some point, having had it with her father and his lies, Kate left the gas escaping on the stove and took off, the house exploding and killing her father - a relief to her! She was subsequently found guilty of murder with no extenuating circumstances, and is on the plane as a transferring prisoner, though she hides that truth for some time after the crash. (There are echoes of the Menendez Brothers Netflix Series here.) On the plane she was in the custody of a US Marshall who was killed in the crash, letting her past be a secret, at least for a while.

Regardless, she remains troubled, as the poison of her father is still inside of her, skewing her reality. Much work remains to decontaminate her core and free her from the hidden abuse. Meanwhile, she is officially a Wanted woman, although for all the wrong reasons!

These LOST toys all have major father issues which they've locked away, leaving the dilemma of how to open the hatch and deal with what is inside of it, the Hatch similar to the locked up core they have and the ticking time bomb inside from the poison that continues to fester. These toys are transitional objects that provide major fodder for therapists trying to moderate father issues clinically. The toys can get people talking, imagining, telling their stories and their heartbreaks rather than keeping it all locked up inside with shame, anger, rage, abandonment and disappointment galore.

Nuclear Family Waste
$20.00

Quick Overview: A humorous, glow-in-the-dark prop for talking about the buried issues every family carries — the things nobody discusses but that shape behavior for generations. Family therapists and counselors can use it to lower defenses and invite clients to name what's been "stored up" and never dealt with.

Every family has some - some families have a warehouse full! With families, as with individuals, we push things down past the barrier into the core for safekeeping and keeping out of sight. Sweep them under the rug and bottle them up tight!

In America we speak of the nuclear family - the family and its nucleus. So, why not call that pushed-down, repressed, suppressed, buried, avoided family issues and family history NUCLEAR FAMILY WASTE. It is toxic after all - radioactive in the sense its negative effects can have a long half-life and remain harmful for many generations. It is perhaps clearer to see in the lives of Native American and African American families who underwent systematic and widespread abuses, even after gaining their so-called freedom. Even this past year, 2024, a Senatorial candidate in Montana disses and makes fun of Native Americans, characterizing their primary identity as being drunks. Even now some want to make it illegal to discuss America's history with Native and African Americans, especially the ugly parts, considering them to have no current relevance and to be something that only makes America and the individuals within it look bad.

Likewise, our country has a vast storage area of Nuclear Family Waste as well! It is toxic. It lasts a long time, it is not easy to clean up once de-contained! It's emotionally and spiritually costly to store it. We also have a literal vast storage area of Nuclear Waste in Hanover, Washington, which has had leaks in its 177 underground tanks and 56 million gallons of radioactive and hazardous chemical waste, contaminating the surrounding land and groundwater. The clean-up is likely to continue for decades.

The waste continues to pollute and contaminate and mutate those in contact with it - whether literal or psychological waste. It doesn’t just go away. It isn’t just a relic of the past and no longer relevant - in my opinion. It needs to be factored in!

This toy helps talk about these issues in a somewhat humorous manner. The goop glows in the dark. It has cockroaches in it, as cockroaches are rumored to be able to survive nuclear holocausts (an untested assumption I believe). But it is good for clients to talk about how much nuclear family waste is stored up inside them and how it effects them. This toy will help!!

THE FINAL BATTLE THE FINAL BATTLE

THE FINAL BATTLE
$55.00

Quick Overview: A peaceful-looking living room conceals a monster erupting from the fireplace — a visual metaphor for families where abuse hides behind a normal facade. Powerful for illustrating how family secrets can coexist with an outwardly ordinary life.

A nice working/middle-class living room with bookcase, fireplace, and fireplace tools, but behind the fire in the fireplace is a hidden world that one days erupts and forever stains the peace of that home.  Addiction, negative mirroring, and violence create hidden worlds that visit horror on the innocent and trusting, whether stranger victims, co-workers, family, or friends – online or in the flesh. The monster is erupting from the wall, there is an opening to another world and innocence is under attack!

When I was providing sex offender treatment, all too often the good family life clients presented was a facade and there was a hidden monster in the home that typically, only the victim every saw in all its true colors and amorality. The hearth is a symbol of home, the home fire, the warmth of the living room, but for a victim of family sexual abuse, it is a place of horror - the penultimate symbol of the lie and abuse hiding in the house. The victim may have thought at times of grabbing some of the fire irons to clobber the perpetrators or use a red hot one to leave a scar.

The offender typically took advantage of this facade and hit behind it - after all, it is hard for the truth of offending to filter into everyday awareness. More often, if it is discovered, the mother is very upset but the father cries and promises to never do it again - Give Me Another Chance! And quite often they get another chance - to be more careful and not get caught next time!

I remember a case where the man was totally in denial. He knew his wife would leave him if he admitted to it and the wife openly stated that their marriage would be over if it turned out he actually abused their daughter. This created a treatment dilemma: he had to own his offense to really get through treatment, but if he did, he would losoe his wife and family. It was a hard choice to come clean. We had a family meeting the day he owned up to the offense. The moment the wife heard his confession, she stood up and walked out - the marriage was over. She had drawn a line and he had crossed it. It was a powerful and painful moment!!

Most offending, including domestic violence, requires an offender to create two worlds: one where he carries out the abuse just as he wants to, and one where he is a good guy, upstanding, non-violent, admirable even. The hidden world does not abide by the morals of the visible world.

When offending, “honesty, integrity and morality went out the window,” as John Edwards mistress said on the UNITED STATES OF SCANDAL on CNN. The train was heading in that direction and she just gave up and went with it. It is even more so with sexual offending.

And one should say, to explain why people are willing to go in this direction and risk their family life, their community standing, their jobs and career, and their freedom! They need mirroring! They feel like they need more attention, and few things are better than sex for providing quick shots of that. Once children enter a marriage, the amount of attention a man gets is watered down and diminished. If a man has a solid foundation, he can handle that. If he has core level damage, he likely has a mirroring deficit and not even a loving wife who shares that love with the children will be enough. A hidden world is required to make up the deficit that existed before the individual even entered his marriage or relationship. It’s only when the amount of mirroring being provided goes down in volume that the deficit shows itself and leads to compensatory behavior. It’s like in a nuclear reactor when the water level covering the plutonium rods starts to drop: thing heat up and move into a danger zone and if things aren’t corrected, bad bad things will start to happen. Some men will just drink or drug rather than betray their loved one sexually. Others will have anonymous sex with other men in shopping center restrooms or parks at night even though they aren’t homosexual - the crux is that they don’t have sex with another woman - it’s a workaround so they don’t have to betray their wife (at least in their own mind).

THE FINAL BATTLE: watch out for those hidden worlds: hidden worlds where the morals and values we tend to hold in common don’t apply. Call it hell, call it hypocrisy, it’s about the ego and core being on the same page. It may take a lot of work to get the ego and core on the same page, but that is what integrity and character is about and that is what treatment is about that is seeking core-level change rather than just a version of “Flip That House!”

Quick Overview: Using Star Wars imagery, this set illustrates how early mirroring shapes a person's psychological "core" toward destruction or resilience — regardless of talent, looks, or success. A vivid, familiar way for therapists and teachers to discuss what really governs behavior under pressure.

Human beings have either a “+” or “-“ sign in their core, depending on the kind of mirroring one received growing up.  That sign determines our default position psychologically:  when the bottom falls out, or we are pushed to our limits, this is what will rule!  Darth Vader signifies death and destruction and hatred in the core, the willingness to harm or kill even one’s own progeny.  Yoda represents the positive ruling the core: resiliency, spirituality and values, the willingness to help others and bring a positive and vital force to life.  It doesn’t matter how good-looking, talented, educated or wealthy you are if you have a festering, destructive core governing your depths and trumping your good intentions.

THE DEATH STAR:  Fits readily inside the large Hoberman to show what rules the core for all the wrong reasons and with no conscience or concern for the welfare of others.

YODA’S DAGOBAH:  Fits readily inside the large Hoberman to show when ethics, values, wisdom and courage rules the core, wisdom derived from lessons learned along the way.
